Africa's fastest man Omanyala however made an improvement from his showing last weekend at the Kip Keino Classic

Ferdinand Omanyala narrowly missed on his quest of running a sub-10 100m race this season after clocking 10.01 at the Rome Diamond League on Friday, 6 June.

Omanyala, 29, finished third in the star-studded event at the Stadio Olimpico, timing his second-fastest time in the distance this year.

American Trayvon Bromell was the winner, leading from the gun to claim a world-leading 9.84.

Cameroon's Emmanuel Esseme was second in a season-best of 9.99 seconds, while former World champion Fred Kerley was only fifth, clocking 10.06.

Despite not getting under the 10-second mark, Omanyala's time in Rome was an improvement on his 10.05 performance at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi last weekend.

For Bromell, the 2016 World indoor 60 meters champion, his latest time was the fastest since the 2022 U.S. Outdoor Championships semifinals - signs of a potential comeback to the top level.

Ejore fades in closing moment

Meanwhile in the women's 1500m, Kenya's Susan Ejore missed out on a big Diamond League victory after fading in the final 50m to finish fifth in a season-best time of 3:59.73.

The US-based Ejore, with 400m to go, looked set for an unprecedented victory, but struggled to stamp her authority on the homestretch, allowing the chasing pack to reel her in.

Republic of Ireland's Sarah Healy took the race win clocking 3:59.17, with the Australian duo of Sarah Billings and Abbey Caldwell finishing second and third in times of 3:59.24 and 3:59.32 respectively.
