Paris Olympics: Kenya’s hope for a maiden medal dashed as Gathimba flops in Paris

Gathimba timed 1:21:22 in twenty-second place, and Ecuador’s Brian Pintado won the men’s 20km, earning the first gold medal at the games

Kenya's hope of bagging a maiden medal at the ongoing Olympic Games suffered a major blow on Wednesday morning after African 20km walking race champion Samuel Gathimba finished in the 22nd position in the men’s 20km race walk.

Gathimba timed 1:21:22 in twenty-second place. Ecuador’s Brian Pintado won the men’s 20km, earning the first gold medal at the games.

The 29-year-old clocked 1:18:55 to earn his country’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics since 1996.

Brazil’s Caio Bonfim took silver in 1:19:09 and world champion Alvaro Martin earned bronze in 1:19:11

Ethiopia’s Wakuma Misgana was the highest-ranking African, clocking 1; 19:31, a new national record to finish sixth.

Gathimba is the immediate former African Games champion, having clocked 1:22:48 to win the title the last time around in Rabat, Morocco.
