Cheruiyot was hoping to retain the World title he won in 2019 in Doha
Kenya's duo of Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang missed the chance to add to the country's medal haul at the ongoing World Championships in Oregon, USA after finishing sixth and seventh respectively in the 1500m men final won by Britain's Jake Wightman on Tuesday morning.
Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen led at the bell for the final lap, but Wightman stuck with the pace and delivered the kick with 200 metres to go, successfully holding off the Norwegian for victory in 3:29.23 with the Kenyans falling off contention for a medal.
Jake Wightman huh! Brilliant run to crown an impressive season with a @WCHoregon22 gold jn men's 1500m. Unexpected for me tbh. Tough luck @tim_cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang. Jacob Ingebrigtsen misses out on the one gold he desperately wants. pic.twitter.com/Fs7DoPqIJE

Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champion over the distance, settled for silver in 3:29.47, with Spain's Mohamed Katir coming third to seal the third podium finish after clocking 3:29.90.
Kipsang exploded to lead from gun off, with Cheruiyot joining towards the 500m mark in a one-two formation but the two could not hold on to their pace past the 700m mark as Ingebrigtsen took charge, leaving the Kenyans to finish on 3:30.69 and 3:31.23 respectively.
