Kipyegon, widely regarded as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time, will step out in the women’s 5000m, as she continues to test herself beyond her trademark 1500m. The Kenyan icon will be among several East African stars carrying the region’s hopes at the opening meet.
Another exciting Kenyan presence will come in the women’s 3000m steeplechas,e where reigning world champion Faith Cherotich faces a loaded field featuring Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai, and former world champion Norah Jeruto.
The men’s 100m is expected to be one of the standout races of the meeting, with Botswana sensation Letsile Tebogo taking on a world-class lineup that includes Christian Coleman, Kenny Bednarek, Akani Simbine and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who was confirmed as a late replacement for Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.
American sprint queen Sha’Carri Richardson will make her season debut in a stacked women’s 200m field that also includes Jamaica’s two-time world champion Shericka Jackson, Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, and Britain’s Amy Hunt.
There will also be huge anticipation in the men’s 300m hurdles, where Norwegian star Karsten Warholm renews his rivalry with Brazil’s Alison dos Santos in the rarely contested event.
In the field events, Swedish pole vault superstar Armand Duplantis, popularly known as Mondo, returns to competition after setting multiple world records over the past few seasons. He will face strong opposition from Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis and American veteran Sam Kendricks.
