Madrid Half Marathon champion Vincent Ng'etich and Berlin bronze medalist Irene Kamais are the winners of the Uhuru Classic Nairobi City 21-km race.

The half marathon that got the proceedings of Africa's richest marathon underway saw the two athletes who are not new to road racing become the first to be feted by President Uhuru Kenyatta who was the chief guest.

More than 9000 athletes had signed up for the event that had different categories with all hoping for a share of the Ksh. 44.8 million set aside as cash prizes.

Ng'etich clocked 1:00.04 with Charles Muneria who watched his bid to clinch the Kip Keino Classic 10000m race go up the air on Saturday at Kasarani Stadium settle for silver in 1:00.48 while under pressure from Geoffrey Kipyegon who timed 1:00.49.

Ng'etich revealed that he had finished fourth in last weekend's Malaga Half Marathon and winning in Nairobi served as perfect redemption after failing to return home with a medal from Spain.

After missing out on the podium in Adizero Road to Record Half Marathon in Germany last week, Weldon Langat consoled himself with victory with victory in the men's 10km race.

The 24-year old who train in Iten finished ninth on German soil and despite not having sufficient rest time, he bossed the ten kilometers race.

"The race was good and served as a build up for the season where I am eyeing a number of races both on the track and the road. It is my dream to represent the country in the World Athletics Championships in Oregon," he said.

Langat who represented Kenya in the Tokyo Olympics 10000m race is also eyeing gold in the Commonwealth Games.
