Kibet's story of the victory is one that elicits mixed reactions as he clocked 2:07:47 to set a new course record.
A volunteer’s mistake where he appears on video directing the first two runners the wrong way, off the view of the cameras before they re-emerge with Kibet ahead, as he goes on to break the course record and earn Ksh3.9 million more for first place.
Kibet, the official first-place finisher clocked 2:07:47, just 5 seconds ahead.
Meanwhile, Kiprop came home in 2:22:57 to win the women's race in her second-fastest marathon ever.
She finished two minutes ahead of Sadiya Awel of Ethiopia who clocked 2:24:57 and Sifan Melaku who completed the podium places in 2:27:10.
The 2024 race marked the first time in the history of international marathon events that a robot had been introduced as an official pacer, turned into a "rabbit" this time.
