Millions up for grab in Glasgow World Athletics Indoor Championships

Over $2 million (Ksh 291 million) will be up for grabs for top performers

The organizers of the World Athletics Indoor Championships slated for March 1-3 in Glasgow, Scotland have confirmed that over $2 million (Ksh 291 million) will be up for grabs for top performers.

Course record breakers and world record breakers are also in for a treat as they will receive a bonus for their extra hard work.

World Athletics also announced that for the indoor gold meeting, at least Ksh1,053,150 in prize money for each discipline on the program, including Ksh451,350 to the winner.

Silver meetings in the expanded tour will award at least Ksh4,513,500 (at least Ksh 601,800 per discipline and respecting gender equality) and bronze meetings will offer at least Ksh1,805,400 (at least Ksh376,125 per discipline and respecting gender equality).

Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala will be out to extend his fine run following his recent impressive performance in the Elite Indoor Track Miramas Meeting in France where he breezed to a new national record time in the 60m dash.

Omanyala who timed 6.62 in Heat 1, produced a fine run in the finals, bursting out to shatter his personal best in a winning time of 6.52, one that outdid his previous and national record time by 0.2 seconds.

Youngster Noah Kibet who will compete in the 800m category will be out to register a personal best. The 2021 World Under-20 Champion whose records last year didn’t go particularly to script, will be hoping the start can inspire a better performance this season, with the Paris Olympics set for July.

Kibet will be up against World Indoor 800m champion Collins Kipruto who will also be keen to register impressive results in Scotland.

In the women's category, Vivian Kiprotich will be seeking to follow in the footsteps of Mary Moraa and bring gold to the country.

Kiprotich who finished at position four during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest will be aiming to go one step further.

Reigning World Under 20 1,500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot will be keen to register good results in his category.

The youngster is bolstered by the ratification of his world record set at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League final.

He outclassed a strong contingent to finish fifth in 3:48:06 in the race that featured a host of fast times, including the winning Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Cheruiyot will lock horns with Vincent Keter Kibet.

Teresia Muthoni Gateri will represent Kenya in the women's 3,000m category. No male athlete has been selected in the category.

Zablon Ekhal Ekwam, Boniface Mweresa, Kelvin Sane, and Wiseman Were will compete in the 4 × 400m relay men category.

The team has been sharpening its claws and will depart for Glasgow on Wednesday 28th February.
