As the 2025 season draws close, the father of one will be keen to get back to Team Kenya for the 2025 World Athletics Championships
“Train them young” seems to be Mark Otieno’s mantra as the former Kenyan 100m champion has already gotten Luke Baraka Odhiambo ‘running’.
The 31-year-old sprinter shared an endearing video with his 11-month-old son Luke on a training track with the caption; “Elite relay practice to wrap up today's training session. My teammates' speed is unlike anything I've seen on the track (sic).”
Otieno alongside his spouse Stephanie Muluka Odhiambo, who is also a sprinter welcomed their bundle of joy on 16 January 2024, a development he admitted had renewed his motivation to achieve more in the sport.
The three-time national champion made a return to training in August last year and was back racing competitively on Saturday 6 April as Athletics Kenya selected their squad to the World Relays Championships in Nassau, Bahamas.
This was after the sprinting sensation tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid methasterone and was suspended from the Tokyo Games in 2021 moments before he was due to compete in the 100m heats, serving a two-year ban.
He had another shot at the Summer Games with the Paris Olympics happening in 2024 but his season-best 10.12 seconds at the national trials fell short of the qualifying time.
He went on to compete at the Africa Athletics Championships, finishing fifth in the men’s 100m semifinal and missing a slot in the final before competing in the men’s 4x100m relay team that finished fifth in the final.
He then raced at the International Wiesław Maniak Memorial, clocking 10.60 seconds to cross the finish line in third place.
As the 2025 season draws close, the father of one will be keen to get back to Team Kenya for the 2025 World Athletics Championships scheduled to be held from 13 to 21 September in Tokyo.
