Otieno, makes a return at a time when long-time rival Ferdinand Omanyala is at the top of his game and the duo is expected to light up the Athletics scene in the next few months ahead of the Paris Olympics

Former national 100m champion Mark Otieno made his return to competitive racing this weekend, participating in the third Athletics Kenya (AK) track meeting at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Otieno is fresh from serving a doping ban that cut his Olympics dream short back in 2021 as he was preparing to make his debut at the Summer Games, and this, according to him, is his second chance.

The 30-year-old clocked 10.41seconds in 100m heats on Friday to mark his return.

This marks Otieno’s first competition on home soil after completing his doping ban back on July 30, 2023.

“It felt really good and I am happy to be back. This is what I had missed and I am glad to be back. It has been a tough period was mentally prepared so it wasn’t hard to come out and compete.

Since the season’s calendar came out, I have been preparing mentally. I was ready and I felt okay," he told Capital Sport.

Otieno, makes a return at a time when long-time rival Ferdinand Omanyala is at the top of his game and the duo is expected to light up the Athletics scene in the next few months ahead of the Paris Olympics.

“I am looking forward to run faster and if I can get races outside the country then it would be great.

I am looking forward to competing with Omanyala again. He has really gone beyond and broken the ceiling, showing that it is possible to achieve great things.

He has encouraged me a lot with the milestones he has achieved and I hope to follow the same path to greatness, ” Otieno continues.
