It is his passion for education that will see Eliud Kipchoge participate in the Chepsaita Cross Country Run

Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge is set to headline the second edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross-Country Run pencilled for Saturday 7 December in Uasin Gishu County.

The event, themed "Run to Educate," is a charitable initiative dedicated to transforming education for underprivileged children in the region.

Kipchoge has consistently championed the transformative power of education and emphasized its role in shaping a brighter future for individuals and communities. He frequently supports initiatives that encourage learning and personal growth.

It is this passion for education that will see him participate in the Chepsaita Cross Country Run.

“I will be running for education, as you know education is the ultimate equalizer,” Kipchoge said, ahead of the event.

This year’s proceeds will go towards refurbishing the nearby Chepsaita Secondary School, while the top 100 finishers in each of the 11 competition categories will earn scholarships.

The initiative allows participants to compete not just for themselves but also for others in the community, enabling winners to donate scholarships to needy children.

The event promises an array of engaging activities alongside the races, including tree planting to promote sustainability, a free medical camp, and a cultural exhibition showcasing local heritage.

Organizers hope to make a broader impact through these complementary programs.

This year’s edition aims to draw 10,000 participants across a range of categories, from senior men (10km) and senior women (8km) to Under-20 and children’s races. Senior citizens will also have their moment to shine, highlighting the inclusivity of the event.

“Our theme for this year is Run and Educate because this event offers young athletes the chance to expose their talents while also allowing them to better their education through scholarships,” said event patron Farouk Kibet.

The inaugural edition of the Great Chepsaita Run saw standout performances from athletes like former Africa Under-20 1500m silver medalist Edinah Jebitok and former world cross-country junior champion Ishmael Kipkurui.

Jebitok triumphed in 26:16.7, while Kipkurui clocked an impressive 23:16.2.

This year, organizers aim to build on that momentum, making the run a platform for athletic development and an instrument of social change.
