Magut, Limo bag millions after triumphing in 2024 Nairobi City Marathon

Eliud Magut and Cynthia Limo defied all manner of odds to emerge the winners of the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon held on Sunday 8 September in Nairobi.

38-year-old Magut crossed the line in 2:09:47 to win the men’s category while Limo, 35, won the women’s race in 2:28:02.

Consequently, they will both be rewarded Ksh3.5 million for their efforts on the course.

In the early kilometers of the race, Magut was no favorite as he seemed uninterested, as he raced behind two athletes.

Geoffrey Chirchir took the lead of the pack until the 30th kilometer, with Magut and Victor Rotich following him closely.

Magut would however unleash his best run as they approached the finish line to dominantly claim the win.

Josphat Bett came in second in 2:10:01 while Emmanuel Sikuku completed the podium in 2:10:05. Byegon Kiprono came in fourth in 2:10:06.

The women’s category was also as heated as the men’s.

Mercy Kamau took an early lead, and was favorable at the 13km.

Hot on her heels was Leah Cheruto while Hellen Chepkorir and Gladys Cheruto were running at position three and four respectively.

However, as they passed the 21st kilometer, Cheruto took the lead while Chepkorir and Cheruto followed closely.

By this time, Kamau who was initially at the lead could not be traced.

As they approached the 30km mark, Cheruto was still on the lead with Chepkorir running at position two.

A new face; Lilian Chebii had now joined the leading pack and was at third position with Jeruto running closely at position four.

With only 12km remaining, Limo came from behind to run a solo race to the finish line, clocking 2:28:02.

Chebii also held on to the win, but came in less than a second behind Limo. She clocked 2:28:29 while Peris Jerono claimed the third place in 2:30:43.

Half Marathon

Robert Kiprop and Marion Kibor claimed the top honors in the 21km race. Kiprop crossed the line in 1:00:56 while Kibor clocked 1:08:55.

In the men’s race, Kiprop led from gun to tape to emerge victorious.

He was followed by Wilson Too who came in second in 1:01:14 while Timothy Kibet clocked 1:01:25 to complete the podium.

Gladys Chepkurui came in second in a time of 1:08:57 while Sharon Kiptugen made a statement by claiming a podium finish in 1:09:20.
