Kenya received a nod to host the international championship after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ISF
St Francis Kimuron High School games teacher Boniface Limo is banking on his trio to record great performances in the upcoming International Schools Sports Federation (ISF) World School Cross Country Championships scheduled for the Ngong Race Course from 10-15 May.
The trio includes Fanuel Koech, Benson Tipapa Kirongos and Cleophas Koromon.
According to Limo, the team is well-placed to win gold medals and add feathers to the school’s already decorated cabinet.
“The entire school is expecting the three athletes to bring gold in their categories when the championship start on Saturday. We have been in constant communication with both the students and their coaches at their training base in Ngong,” said Limo.
Koech won the national trials held at the Nakuru High School and will be competing in the U18 category. This is the highest-ranked age at the championship.
“Koech has been very consistent both in school and other championships. He won the Rift valley Secondary Schools Sports Association Championship held in Kapsabet and finished fourth at the Africa Under 20 championships held last year in Ndola, Zambia in the 800m,” Limo praised.
At the same time, Kirongos won the U15 title during the trials to book a slot in team Kenya for the championships.
“He is still a young boy who can maintain the culture of our school in running. At his age, competing in the under 15 will keep him fit for long,” Limo offered.
Finishing the list is Koromon who will compete in the U16 category. The youngster claimed seventh position at the trials and came in 10th at the Rift Valley championship. He will be looking to improve on his performance come Saturday.
“I have seen their training sessions and they are doing well. We want to maintain running culture in the school after producing some of the top names that includes the world 800m record holder David Rudisha among others,” said Limo.
The global competition will bring together more than a century of countries.
The majority of participants will be young talented learners between the ages of 12 to 18.
Kenya received a nod to host the international championship after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ISF.
The MoU was signed on 28 November 2023 by the chairman of Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) chairman Kipchumba Maiyo and the President of ISF Laurent Petrynka at the Ministry of Education headquarters at Jogoo House.
The event has received significant backing from the government through Cabinet Secretaries Ezekiel Machogu (Education) and Ababu Namwamba (Sports).
Last year’s 25th edition was held in Slovakia.
Besides sporting activities, attendees will be treated to cultural exchange activities which will give them opportunities to exchange and learn about each participant and their countries.
