The medal soothed his heartbreak after finishing sixth in the 100m that was claimed by Noah Lyles

After winning Botswana’s first Olympic gold medal, sprinter Letsile Tebogo was treated to a hero’s welcome by a multitude of people.

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi had declared a half-day holiday to celebrate the momentous occasion which allowed tens of thousands to welcome their hero.

The country’s National Stadium was packed to the rafters as Tebogo and other Olympians from the country did a lap of honour in an open top tour bus.

Tebogo put Africa on the sprinting map by stunning the whole world to claim gold ahead of the odds on favourite Americans Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles.

In doing so the 21-year-old set an African 200m record of 19.46 seconds and also led the country's men's 4x400m relay team to silver.

The party started right off the airport when the team of athletes landed at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in the country’s capital Gaborone.

After winning gold, Tebogo dedicated the medal to his late mother who passed away back in May after a short bout with illness.

"It's basically me carrying her through every stride that I take inside the field. To take her [with me], it gives me a lot of motivation. She's watching up there, and she's really, really happy."

The medal soothed his heartbreak after finishing sixth in the 100m that was claimed by Noah Lyles.

Tebogo ruffled some feathers with his answer after winning the 200m when asked if he could be the face of sprints like Lyles.

"I think for me I can't be the face of athletics because I'm not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah, so I believe Noah is the face of athletics," said Tebogo.
