Organisers are targeting the course record of 2:07:20, which dates from 2011.
Paris Marathon 2021 bronze medalist Hillary Kipsambu headlines the men’s entry list for this year's Enschede Marathon set for Sunday 16 April in the streets of the Netherlands.
With his 2:04:44 personal best (PB) clocked during his third-place finish in Paris, he is the fastest on paper with compatriot Bernard Kipyego, 2:06:32 runners, the third fastest on the field.
Filex Chemonges from Uganda who has a PB time of 2:05:12 should offer the toughest competition for the Kenyan duo with another Kenyan Alfred Barkach expected to keep the chase close.
Barkach is making his debut in the classic distance and has run the half marathon several times within the hour.
“The runners who are at the start in Enschede know that it is a flat course, that the organization is good, and that it is usually good running weather in April,” says athlete coordinator Herman Moelard.
Organizers are expecting the elite field to stick together in the initial stages of the race which would set the stage for exciting finishes even as anticipation is high for the course record of 2:07:20, which dates from 2011, to be broken.
In the women’s category, Uganda’s Merlyne Chelangat will lead the charge for the course record set by Maurine Chepkemoi as she clocked 2:21:08 last year.
