Kenyan marathoner Brimin Misoi has been handed a five-year ban after testing positive for prohibited substances Erythropoietin (EPO) and Furosemide, the Athletics Integrity Unit announced on Tuesday 1 May.
AIU noted that Misoi, 39, on 15 December 2024 tested positive for furosemide after providing a urine sample in Kaptagat.
The AIU has banned Brimin Misoi Kipkorir (Kenya) for 5 years from 17 February 2025 for Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (EPO, Furosemide). DQ results from 22 November 2024

Eight days later, AIU handed Misoi a notice of allegation, and provided him an opportunity to provide a response.
Two days to the deadline of his expected response, AIU reported that Misoi’s sample had on further analysis revealed the presence of erythropoietin in addition to Furosemide.
It was proven that the athlete had no Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE), and requested him to provide a response for the positive test by no later than 25 February.
On 24 February, the Athlete wrote to the AIU by email stating that he wished to accept a two (2) year ban, but AIU responded on the same day stating “that the nature and seriousness of the Aggravating Circumstances warranted the imposition of the maximum period of Ineligibility of six (6) years.”
The Athlete was reminded that, if he admitted that he had committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations and accepted the proposed consequences at that stage, the six (6)-year period of Ineligibility would be automatically reduced by one (1) year (to a period of Ineligibility of five (5) years).
On 25 February, the Athlete wrote to the AIU by email stating: “I accept the terms.”
Given that it was the Athlete’s first Anti-Doping Rule Violation, Misoi was handed a one-year reduction to his six-year ban.
His period of Ineligibility of five (5) years commences on 17 February (the date of Provisional Suspension), with all results since 22 November being disqualified.
The former Frankfurt Marathon winner is also expected to forfeit any medals, titles, awards, points, prizes, prize money and appearance money accrued since that date.
Misoi in December won the Taipei Marathon timing 2:11:41.
