Kenyan road runner Esther Chesang Kakuri has been sanctioned by the Anti Doping Agency of Kenya for four years for the presence of prohibited substance glucocorticoids/triamcinolone acetonide in her urine samples.

The sanction and period of ineligibility, as indicated on the Sports Dispute Tribunal hearing signed on Monday morning, will take effect from the date of mandatory provisional suspension - 11/05/2022 pursuant to Article 10.2.1.2 of the WADC.

“The Sports Dispute Tribunal has sanctioned Esther Chesang Kakuri to four[4] years - Period of Ineligibility, with effect from 11th May 2022,” a statement from the Anti Doping Agency of Kenya read on Monday. “The athlete was charged with the offense of the Presence of Triamcinolone acetonide.

“The Hearing Panel concurred that even though this was a specified substance, the Agency established intention on the part of the athlete.”

As per the ruling, the ADAK Doping Control Offices on 20/02/2022 collected a urine sample from Chesang while participating in the Kimama Road Race in Kenya and was subsequently analyzed at the WADA accredited laboratory in South Africa.

The result - an Adverse Analytical Finding that revealed the presence of prohibited substance glucocorticoids/triamcinolone acetonide and its metabolite 6B-OH-triamcinolone acetonide which is listed under S9 of the 2022 WADA prohibited list.

The appeal by Chesang as indicated on the ruling stated that in January 2022 she suffered pains in both her feet where she was prescribed for two types of medicines she only remembers one of those prescriptions by the name of Celebrex.

“We find that the athlete has failed to establish origin as her explanation to our comfortable satisfaction has failed to provide support as to how the prohibited substance entered her body,” part of the Monday ruling signed by Panel Chairperson of the Sports Disputes Tribunal Mr. Gichuru Kiplagat read. “Without providing any material as evidence for our scrutiny we are unable to make any other finding.”

Chesang in 2022 won the Sierre Zinal marathon in Switzerland ahead of second-place finisher Maude Mathys from Valais, Switzerland in a time of 2:52:01.
