This new structure will no doubt be welcome news for Kenyan athletes, who can now compete knowing that they have a greater chance of financial reward, regardless of their finishing position

Kenyan athletes are set to benefit significantly from the increased prize money in the Wanda Diamond League starting in 2025, as the competition adopts a new financial structure aimed at offering more rewards across all levels of performance.

This will come as a major boost to Kenyan track and field athletes, who consistently compete at the highest levels in the global athletics scene.

The revamped structure will see a substantial increase in top prizes for individual athletes, along with more money being awarded to lower-finishing competitors, ensuring that athletes from all ranks of the competition can reap financial rewards.

The new prize distribution means that athletes finishing between 9th and 12th will now receive fixed prize money in all disciplines, a change that benefits many Kenyan athletes who often compete in fields with fierce global competition.

In most Diamond Disciplines, the prize for winning at a series meeting remains at 10,000 USD (Ksh1,291,000) with the final offering a top prize of 30,000 USD (Ksh3,870,000).

However, for select events known as Diamond+ Disciplines, the rewards will be even higher. Athletes will be able to earn up to 20,000 USD (Ksh2,580,000) at series meetings and 50,000 USD (Ksh6,450,000) at the Final in these enhanced categories, creating a massive incentive for top-level performances.

Each Wanda Diamond League meeting will feature four Diamond+ Disciplines, two for men and two for women, ensuring a balanced and fair distribution of opportunities for all athletes, including Kenya’s elite performers.

The 2025 season will offer a total of 9.24 million USD (Ksh1,191,960,000) in prize money, the highest in the history of the series, with approximately 18 million USD (Ksh2,322,000,000) paid to athletes over the course of the season when promotional fees for top athletes are factored in.

In addition to the increased financial rewards, around 6 million USD (Ksh774,000,000) will be allocated for athlete services, such as travel, accommodation, and medical support, reducing the burden on athletes and allowing them to focus on their performances.

This new structure will no doubt be welcome news for Kenyan athletes, who can now compete knowing that they have a greater chance of financial reward, regardless of their finishing position.

This shift is a testament to the growing global appreciation for athletics and the need to support athletes at all levels.
