AIU received an Admission of Anti-Doping Rule Violation and Acceptance of Consequences Form signed by the 33-year-old athlete.

Road and mountain runner Mark Kangogo has had his four-year ban for doping reduced to three after admitting to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) that he used a prohibited performance-enhancing drug.

On 13 August 2022, Kangogo provided a urine Sample in-Competition at the ‘Sierre-Zinal WMRA World Cup race’ held in Switzerland with AIU finding the presence or use of prohibited substances (Norandrosterone & Triamcinolone acetonide).

A month later World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland (the “Laboratory”) reported an Adverse Analytical Finding in the Sample based on the presence of Norandrosterone and Triamcinolone Acetonide.

After being notified of the findings, Kangogo wrote to the AIU with the list of supplements and medications that he said he had used to treat an ankle injury prior to the doping control.

However, none of them listed Norandrosterone or Triamcinolone Acetonide in their ingredients

Back on Monday 10 October, the AIU received an Admission of Anti-Doping Rule Violation and Acceptance of Consequences Form signed by the 33-year-old athlete.

AIU noted that Kangogo will therefore receive a one-year reduction in the asserted period of ineligibility based on an early admission and acceptance of sanction.

The mountain runner’s period of Ineligibility of three (3) years commencing on 9 September 2022.

Kangogo holds the Luxembourg Marathon course record set in 2018 and added to the list of 20 Kenyan athletes, who have now been sanctioned by AIU this year alone.
