Kenya ended a 14-year wait for the African men’s 10,000 metres title after Kelvin Chesang stormed to victory at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday evening.

Chesang produced a powerful finish in a tightly contested race to clinch gold in 28:30.44, narrowly edging Ethiopia’s Hagos Eyob Gared, who settled for silver after clocking 28:30.57.
Kenya further strengthened its dominance in the race through Silas Senchura, who secured bronze in 28:32.66 to ensure two Kenyans finished on the podium.
The victory marked a major milestone for Team Kenya, who had gone 14 years without winning the continental men’s 10,000m crown.
Kenya last won the title in 2012 through Kenneth Kipkemoi during the championships held in Porto-Novo, Benin.

Chesang’s triumph once again highlighted Kenya’s continued strength in long-distance running and handed the country one of its standout moments at the championships in Ghana.
Elsewhere, Team Kenya also celebrated success in the mixed 4x400m relay after the quartet of Samuel Chege, Laoline Aoko, Dennis Masika, and Maureen Najala combined to secure bronze.
The Kenyan team clocked 3:17.94 to finish behind champions Nigeria, who won gold in 3:16.44, adding another medal to Kenya’s growing tally at the continental showpiece.
Earlier in the evening, Kenyan decathlete Edwin Too also impressed after clinching silver in the decathlon to cap a successful day for Team Kenya in Accra.
Kenya’s strong performances across both track and field events continue to underline the country’s status as one of Africa’s athletics powerhouses as the championships progress in Ghana.
