
Kenya dominates as Ruto leads clean-sweep at Rome Marathon

In the women’s category, Ivyne Lagat led a 1-2 finish for Kenya with Lydia Simiyu coming second with a time of 2:25:09 ahead of Ethiopian Niguse Emebet who clocked 2:26:40 to complete the medal bracket
Asbel Rutto led a Kenyan men’s clean sweep at the Rome Marathon on Sunday to claim the first eight positions while at the same time setting a new course record while Ivyne Lagat won the women’s race in a time of 2:24:35.36
Rutto emerged the winner of the race when he clocked 2:06:23 to set a new course record and hit his second podium finish in less than three months after he came second in the Mersin International Marathon in Turkey last year December.
It was only the third marathon the 22-year-old had taken part in and his dominant display saw him post a huge personal best from the previous time of 2:09:46.
Brian Kipsang finished second while Sila Kiptoo came third timing at 2:07:55 and 2:08:08 respectively to complete a podium finish for Kenya.
Reuben Narray, Isaac Cheluko, Samuel Kiptoo, Paul Tiongik, and John Rotich claimed the remaining top eight positions in a show of dominance by Kenya.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Lagat led a 1-2 finish for Kenya with Lydia Simiyu coming second with a time of 2:25:09 ahead of Ethiopian Niguse Emebet who clocked 2:26:40 to complete the medal bracket.
Runners Lab Half Marathon Ghent winner Kipsiror Shamilah Tekaa missed finished fourth a minute behind the Ethiopian clocking 2:27:32 while Abdeta Obse rounded up the top five.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Ababu Namwamba led a contingent of Kenyan leaders in congratulating the marathoners for their dominance in the streets of Rome.
