Amos Kipruto and Kelvin Kiptum lead Kenya's onslaught

Despite the absence of marathon record holder and four-time winner Eliud Kipchoge, organisers of this year’s London Marathon set for 23 April, have a stellar field.

Four of the five fastest men in history will compete at the event, returning to its traditional April date since the Covid-19 pandemic disruption.

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor will line up for the elite men’s race as he makes his debut in the race. The two-time New York Marathon champion was recently in action at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships where he led Kenya to a team gold in the senior 10km race, despite missing out on the podium.

“The cross-country race was part of preparations for the London Marathon. I am happy to be making my debut there, a course that I have always dreamed of running and now that the chance is here, I am doing everything to be ready,” Kawmoror said.

Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele (PB 2:01:41), a three-time Olympic champion and the second fastest marathon runner in history, headlines the star-studded field that also includes compatriots Birhanu Legese (2:02:48) and Mosinet Geremew (2:02:55).

Kenya’s campaign to make sure the title comes home is led by Kelvin Kiptum, the surprise winner of the 2022 Valencia Marathon and the fastest marathon debutant in history who clocked 2:01:53 in that race.

In addition, the London champion Amos Kipruto (2:03:13), Vincent Kipchumba (2:04:28) and Kamworor (2:05:23) have their work cut out.

“Winning last year’s TCS London Marathon was an incredible experience for me. I can’t wait to return to London as the champion. The course always has a really strong field and this year is the same so I know I will face a battle to defend my title, but I’m confident and looking forward to it,” Kipruto said in a recent interview.
