The World Youth 1,500m champion, Jebitok, made her debut in the senior category in January and made it to the Olympics semis in the mile

Kenya's Ednah Jebitok clocked 30:44 to finiah second to Ethiopia’s Degitu Azimeraw who cut the tape in 30:26 for gold at the 57th San Silvestre Vallecana, a World Athletics Elite Label Road Race on New Year's Eve.

Two-time world 5000m champion and Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiri was set to be the star act in the women's 10km race and was touted as the favourite fir gold. She is, however, reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 and therefore could not compete.

Possibly the most prestigious of the myriad of New Year's Eve races around the world, the race was returning to its usual circuit after a change last year because of the pandemic.

Heading into the race, Azimeraw, an accomplished road specialist having recorded the second quickest ever marathon debut when she won in Amsterdam in 2:19:26 in 2019 to also break the course record in the Dutch city was seen as a the biggest threat to Obiri and in the Kenyan's absence, she lived up to her biling.

The win in Madrid adds to a stellar career in road racing for the 22 year old Ethiopian. In 2020 she had a fine performance over the classic distance of 2:19:56 for sixth in Valencia. She moved to 11th on the world all-time list last October following her runner-up spot in London in a big lifetime best of 2:17:58.

Azemiraw boasts a relatively modest 31:03.32 10,000m clocking set in Hengelo a couple of years ago.

33-year-old Lonah Salpeter who holds the European 10km record with a 30:05 time to her credit set in Tilburg in 2019, one year after she won the European 10,000m title in Berlin clocked 31:14 to complete the podium finishes.

In a separate 5km race, BOclassic Alto Adige- Corsa di San Silverstro Bolzano in Italy, Kenya's Norah Jeruto timed 15:24 for second place in a race won by Ethiopia’s Dawit Seyaum in 15:22. Nadia Battocletti of Italy was third in 15:55.

The men's 10km race at the same event was won by Tadese Worku in 28:18 ahead of compatriot Tamirat Tola in 28:26 while Great Britain's Thomas Mortimer was third in 29:23.
