
Janeth Chepngetich storms to 10,000m glory against World Record holders

Janeth Chepngetich, the 2023 African Games 10,000m champion, will line up against global stars at this year's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.
The 26-year-old took down a field that had world silver medalist and multiple World Record holder Beatrice Chebet and Agnes Jebet Ngetich to win the Athletics Kenya (AK) trials on Tuesday, 22 July, in 30:27.0

The Kenyan trials are qualifying the first two across the line with the third athlete in each event at the discretion of selectors.
She won the African title in 33:37.00 but the woman of all surfaces brought a 30:04.97 personal best (PB) to the trials.
Going up against the two women who dragged her to a PB at the Prefontaine Classic 5000m, a World Championship qualifying event, Chebet who broke the World Record in 13:58.06 and Jebet who finished second in 14:01.29, Chepngetich stayed with the duo, taking charge in the final lap for victory.
The thin field of seven were split strung in single file just few laps into the race with Chepngetich going ahead and dictating pace for the better part of the opening half.
He women’s-only 10km world record holder, Jebet oil over, keeping the pace at a sub-31 run. She took the bell ahead but Chepngetich got the better of her on the final bend, going on to win.
"I am happy for this win. Running against such talents is challenging and with them in the squad for Tokyo, we are confident of bringing medals," Chepngetich offered.
