He set the leading time in 3000m this year

18-year-old Ishmael Kipkurui clocked 7:41.38 to storm to victory in the men's 3000m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne, Australia, World Athletics Continental Tour Gold gunned off.

The teenager was fresh from his heroics in Bathurst last Saturday where he clocked 24:29 to end Kenya's drought in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships junior men's title as he led his compatriot Reynold Cheruiyot to a 1-2 finish.

He produced the World leading time over the 3000m distance this year, eclipsing Fouad Messaoudi's time of 7:41.38 set earlier this month.

Australia's Stewart McSweyn finished second on 7:44.36, with Uganda's 19-year-old Dan Kibet closing the podium finish on 7:50.11.

In a notable performance, the world’s fastest man in 2022, Fred Kerley, opened his season in a spectacular manner as he breezed to first place in the men's 200m race, clocking 20.32, and celebrating the victory almost 40m to the finish line.

Australia's duo of premier sprinter Rohan Browning, who was stepping up to 200m for the occasion, and national 200m champion Aidan Murphy finished second and third respectively a couple of milliseconds behind Kerley.

Next on the list of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold schedule is the Grenada Invitational which will take place at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium on April 22.
