The two-time Olympic champion and world record holder, celebrated a momentous milestone as he exchanged vows with his wife Dr. Mercy Chumbaa

A common adage says, 'Your network is your net worth' and this sentiment came alive during 800m World record holder David Rudisha’s engagement ceremony.

The ceremony that happened on Saturday 18 January in Moiben, Uasin Gishu county brought together a galaxy of athletics stars.

The two-time Olympic champion and world record holder, celebrated a momentous milestone as he exchanged vows with his wife Dr. Mercy Chumbaa.

From world record holders to Olympic medalists, the guest list read like a who’s who of Kenyan athletics, drawing cheers and admiration from attendees.

Their presence was not just felt in their star power but also in the team spirit they exuded, mingling with fans and sharing heartfelt moments with the groom.

Among the distinguished guests were Olympic 800m gold medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi, former teammate and coach Nakeel Sylvester—now mentor to rising star Koitatoi Kidali, 1998 Commonwealth Games 800m champion Japheth Kimutai, and multiple 3,000m steeplechase world champion Ezekiel Kemboi.

Also, in attendance were former 1,500m world champion Asbel Kiprop, Rudisha’s former pacemaker Sammy Tangui, 2007 world 800m champion Janeth Jepkosgei, and retired marathoner Jerry Maritim, among other luminaries.

Videos from the event showcased lighthearted moments, including clips of Kemboi and Wanyonyi showing off their dance moves, which have since gone viral online.

Rudisha had earlier offered a glimpse into the special occasion by sharing the official invitation card on his social media platforms.

The elegant card read: “We, Dr. Mercy Chumbaa & David Rudisha, with the blessings of our parents, invite you to our engagement and farewell party to be held on 18th, January 2025, from 10 am at Sergoit Gardens, along Moiben Road, Uasin Gishu County. Be Blessed as you Purpose to Attend.”

Adding a touch of romance and glamour to the day was Dr. Chumbaa’s breathtaking gown.

The floor-length dress combined elegance and drama with its fitted silhouette, intricate lace detailing in a soft dusty rose, and delicate embellishments that sparkled in the light.

A striking one-shoulder detail flowed gracefully from the neckline to the waist, creating an asymmetrical effect that perfectly complemented the gown’s sophisticated design.

Rudisha set a world record during the 2012 London Olympics where he not only won gold but also broke the world record with a time of 1:40.91.

He led from gun to tape to win gold in what was acclaimed "The Greatest 800 Meter Race Ever". In doing so, he became the first and, so far, the only runner to break the 1:41 barrier for 800m. More than a decade on, the record still stands. His average speed per 200m section was 25.22.
