Kipyegon had set the record in June in Paris
World 10000m champion Tsegay Gudaf has broken Faith Kipyegon’s 5000m record after coasting to victory in the Diamond League final at the Hayward Field in Oregon on Sunday night.
Gudaf was head and shoulders above the rest on the track, defying the hot conditions to break the record held by the Kenyan who interestingly set in June this year in Paris.
She clocked 14:00.21 to obliterate Kipyegon’s record as well as clinch the title in style.
A world record wasn’t expected from the race and from Gudaf to be precise considering that she slipped to a disappointing eleventh finish in Budapest, losing her title to Kipyegon and missing on the podium.
London Marathon champion Sifan Hassan and Beatrice Chebet took silver and bronze in Budapest.
However, there was something special under Gudaf’s wraps as she unleashed the race of her life in her specialty, breaking the record in the end.
Chebet, who was bidding to retain the Diamond League title tried to catch up with Gudaf but the Ethiopian proved strong, breaking from the Kenyan who was breathing behind her back in the penultimate lap and maintaining a significant gap.
The former world silver medalist came in second with a personal best of 14:05.92 with world 10000m bronze medalist Ejgayehu Taye finishing third in 14:21.52.
Lilian Kasait, fresh from winning the Brussels leg finished fourth after timing 14:40.81.
