Teenage sensation and reigning world U20 3000m steeplechase Faith Cherotich has made the final list for the 2023 Women’s Rising Star Award, which will recognise this year's best U20 athlete at the World Athletics Awards 2023.
The nominations reflect some of the standout performances that the sport has witnessed this year, at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, one-day meeting circuits, and other events around the world.
Cherotich finished third for bronze in the World Championships 3000m steeplechase race won by Winfred Yavi ahead of world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech.
Her personal best time of 8:59.65 moved her to second place in the U20 all-time list and managed a fourth-place finish in the World Cross Country Championships U20 race.
She goes up against Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, the World Cross Country Championships U20 silver medalist who finished sixth at the World Championships 5000m with a 14:16.54 PB.
She was also in the World Road Running Championships, competing in the 5km race for a fourth-place finish.
Angelina Topic of Serbia is the third contestant for the award, having competed in the World Championships high jump for a seventh-place finish. She holds a 1.97m national record and is the European U20 champion in the discipline.
The winner of the 2023 Women’s Rising Star Award will be selected by an international panel of experts and announced on World Athletics’ platforms on December 11.
