The Stargirl will take on her opponents almost a year after she broke the world record at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris last season.
The long wait is finally over for Faith Kipyegon’s fans, as she will return to the track in less than a fortnight.
The queen of 1,500m will open her season on May 25 at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon, where she is expected to compete in the 5000m event.
The Stargirl will take on her opponents almost a year after she broke the world record at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris last season.
She etched her name in the annals of history in 2023 after breaking three world records in a span of one month. She triumphed in Florence before setting a 5,000m record in Paris and a mile record in Monaco.
She holds the Kenyan national record in the 5000m event at 14:05.20. Her best; the now-former world record is over five seconds off Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, who currently holds a world record of 14:00.21 set last September in Eugene. Kipyegon’s 1500m best is the world record at 3:49.11.
The race will glue fans to their screens as they anticipate Kipyegon to take back the 5000m world record from Tsegay, making history as the first woman to run sub-14:00. The race will also serve as a springboard ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
In Oregon, she will be joined by several superstars, including world champions, Olympic champions, and reigning Diamond League champions.
The women's 1500m will pit Ethiopia's World Athletics Championships silver medalist Diribe Welteji against British star and two-time Diamond League champion Laura Muir.
In the men's 110m hurdles, world champion Grant Holloway of the USA takes on Olympic champion Hansle Parchment of Jamaica, just nine months after Parchment sensationally snatched the Diamond League title away from him in Eugene last year. Fellow American Daniel Roberts, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of beating both men after starting the season with back-to-back victories in Xiamen and Suzhou.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 13th–14th.
