The 5000m Olympic silver medalist further noted that she refuses to let money or her achievements define her

Three-time 1,500m Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon recently opened up on the financial wisdom imparted by her mentor Vivian Cheruiyot.

Cheruiyot, a multiple world champion in 5,000m and 10,000m has played a pivotal role in shaping Kipyegon’s perspective on money, career longevity, and life beyond athletics.

Speaking on an episode of Engage Talk, Kipyegon noted that she is closely following in Cheruiyot's footsteps to leave a mark on the world.

"I thank my mentor, Vivian. Since I saw her when she was a young girl like me—she was also very short, and she's still short—she has been an excellent mentor.

She has been telling me, career-wise, that this running is not for a long time and you have to invest and do other things," Kipyegon explained.

The 5000m Olympic silver medalist further noted that she refuses to let money or her achievements define her. The essence of her journey lies not in the medals or financial gains but in the ability to uplift and support those she loves most like her family and siblings.

"For me, where I've learned from and where I've come from, money will not define who I am. With the money I have, I try to do what is necessary.

Nike dresses me very well, so I don't need to buy clothes. I do other things to support my family and my siblings," she continued.

She went on to acknowledge that her time as an athlete is finite and noted that she was intentional about preparing for life beyond the track.

"You know, athletics is not for a longer time. I need to invest at the moment. I want to do something so people will know Faith even after my running days when I was still strong," she said.

Kipyegon has also been making waves with her transition to longer distances.

In 2023, she debuted in the 5000m at the World Athletics Championships and clinched gold. She followed this remarkable feat with a silver medal in the 5000m at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"I think it's solely the mindset. You have to just set your mind that I'm moving from 1500m to 5000 and I still have to achieve what I have achieved in 1500m before moving to the other distance. I think it's the mind tuning," she concluded.
