He finished second to Evans Chebet in Valencia last year, clocking his PB as Chebet clocked 2:03:00, moving up to No 7 on the all-time list.
Since missing out on an Olympics medal on his debut after he was out-sprinted in the last 100m, Lawrence Cherono will on Sunday 5 December be in action at the Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso EDP.
A World Athletics Elite Platinum Label race that in 2021 wants to continue making history by breaking records, Cherono headlines the elite field that has Herpasa Negasa (2:03.40) the 2019 Dubai runner-up, and 2019 Valencia winner Kinde Atanaw (2:03.51) as the other sub-2:04 performers in the field.

The 2019 Boston and Chicago champion, Cherono coming off a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Games is returning to the scene of his 2:03:04 Personal Best (PB), a time which makes him the fastest in the field.
A fourth force will be Geoffrey Kamworor, winner of three world half marathon titles and two world cross-country titles who is eager to improve on his 2:06:12 PB, set on his debut at the distance back in 2012. The two-time New York Marathon champion is touted as the next big marathon runner post the Eliud Kipchoge era.

Eyes will be on Cherono who made his debut in marathon running outside the country in 2015, finishing second in the Algiers Marathon, a win that saw him enrol at the Rosa Associati Athletics Camp where he dived into athletics fully.
The same year he managed to win Seville Marathon in Spain, clocking 2:09:39 before he finished second in Hong Kong Marathon in 2:12:14. In 2016, Cherono won Prague Marathon in 2:07:24 before closing the season with a win in Honolulu Marathon in 2:09:39.
He was second in Rotterdam Marathon in 2017 after timing 2:06:21 before winning in the Amsterdam Marathon where he clocked 2:05:09. He defended Honolulu Marathon with a course record of 2:08:27.
In 2018, he had his shot at the World Marathon Majors in London, but a hamstring injury slowed him down in the second part of the race and he eventually finished seventh in 2:09:25. Cherono later that year retained his Amsterdam Marathon title in a course record of 2:04:06.
