As the world marks Global Running Day, legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge is calling on people across the globe to lace up and rediscover the joy of the movement.

This year’s celebration, falling on Wednesday, 4 June, is not just about elite athletes or seasoned marathoners.

It is a global invitation for everyone, regardless of ability or experience, to embrace running in whatever way they can.

And who better to spearhead this than Kipchoge, the man who defied limits by running a marathon in under two hours!

In a message posted on his social media handles, Kipchoge explained some of the benefits of running.

Every run has its purpose. To rise, to keep moving, to feel free. We run through early mornings, hard days, and moments of doubt. We run to grow stronger, to feel better, to be ourselves. Running is not just a sport; it is who we are,” he said.

He has been vocal about his desire to help ‘make this world a running world', and he emphasized it in his message.

This global running day, and every day, join us, and let’s make this world a running world,” he revealed.

The desire to instill the running culture is the reason the Tokyo Olympics champion wants to continue running in big city marathons like Chicago, New York, and Tokyo.

This is a man who has done the impossible by running the first sub-two-hour marathon, and the merely improbable by becoming a globally famous long-distance runner.

He has set the world record multiple times and reaped wholesomely from it. Life is running for Kipchoge. Life has to be running.

While many associate running with physical health, such as improved cardiovascular fitness and weight management, emerging research highlights its profound impact on cognitive functions as well.

Global Running Day started in the United States in 2009, although at the time it was referred to as National Running Day. The inaugural Global Running Day was held on 1 June 2016.

On that day, over 2.5 million runners from 177 different countries took part, running an estimated 9.2 million miles between them. We get out of breath just thinking about all that running.

The day aims to get everyone moving and be more active, and champions not just the physical health benefits of running but also the mental health benefits it can have, such as reduced anxiety.

Whether you’re a regular runner or a bit of a novice, it does not matter. This holiday is about inspiring each other to lead a more active lifestyle, no matter the distance covered.

This celebration is open and free to everyone.

Simply grab your running shoes, a bottle of water, and get your legs moving.
