The winner will receive a grand prize of Ksh4.5 million

Four Kenyan athletics greats, in their own individual rights, will compete for the honour of Africa Golden Awards Best Athlete of the Year 2025.

Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, Africa's 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala, Chicago Marathon bronze medalist Amos Kipruto, and former 800m Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir have been nominated for the award.

The Africa Golden Awards aim to celebrate African culture and brands across all walks of life, with the sports category specifically recognizing African athletes in different disciplines who had a stellar season in 2024.

They are set to battle for the title alongside other athletic greats who hit the headlines in 2024, led by World 5,000m and 10,000m record holder Joshua Cheptegei, former Olympic champion Selemon Barega, teenage sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, and Akani Simbine, among others.

Kipruto finished third in his only marathon of 2024, clocking 2:04:50 to settle for bronze at the Chicago Marathon.

Despite a tenth-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon in March 2024, running 2:06:50 before registering his first-ever Did Not Finish (DNF) at the Paris Olympics, Kipchoge makes the list.

Omanyala, on his part, finished fourth at the World Athletics Indoor Championships held in Glasgow, clocking 6.56. A couple of podium finishes in the Diamond League and continental competitions prepared the African record holder for the Olympics, where he qualified for the semis, finishing eighth.

Korir, on his part, raced sparingly in 2024, failing to qualify for the Summer Games.

The voting process started on Sunday, 9 March, and will continue until Monday, 21 April, with the award gala set for Saturday, 3 May, at Elmara Ole Sereni in Nairobi.
