
Eldoret City Marathon set for 25 June

The iconic Eldoret City Marathon is held annually in the streets of Eldoret and is one of the best paying in Africa
Dates for the 2023 edition of the coveted Eldoret City Marathon have been announced.
The delay of the marathon, which happened last year on 10 April, was caused by technicalities that saw payment of cash awards for the 2022 Eldoret City Marathon winners done late.
This year’s edition will be held on 25 June in Eldoret.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday 5 April, race director Moses Tanui announced the dates, assuring that last year’s shortcomings have been worked on and promised fans an exciting 2023 edition.
16 April, the initial date of the race will athletes from Eldoret gather for a tree-planting exercise at the Eldoret Sports Club and Kapseret Forest.
“The tree-planting exercise is part of our climate action to ensure the athletes have a good training environment,” the two-time Boston marathon winner said further urging athletes who wish to participate in the marathon to register. Registration opens next week.
According to Tanui, his dream is to see the marathon running for many years, and he vowed to uphold the sincerity of the same.
At the same time, the race director announced that the routes have been changed after the opening of the Southern bypass.
The winners of the 2022 edition received their pay on March 10 after waiting for eleven months. Winners in both men and women categories, Victor Kipchirchir and Emily Chebet went home ksh 3.5 million richer as all the top 20 athletes received their cash awards.
In the 2022 edition held on April 10, Kipchirchir defended his title in 2:13.10 ahead of Michael Mutai who clocked 2:13.23 while Josephat Bett sealed the podium places in 2:13.58.
In the women’s category, Emily Chebet won in 2:29.57 ahead of Shyline Jepkorir who timed 2:30.13 while Lilian Jelagat was third in 2:30.23.
The marathon has produced some of the best talents in the country including world marathon silver medalist Judith Korir who was placed second in 2021 before representing Kenya at the World Championship in Oregon, USA last year.
