Business in Eldoret came to a standstill as Kenyans poured on streets to watch Kipchoge run
The undying love for athletics in Eldoret was again witnessed on Sunday morning as passionate fans moved in flocks to cheer on Kenyans competing in the Berlin Marathon.
Excitement was in the air as Eliud Kipchoge crossed the finish line to not only defend his title but also bag his fifth crown in the German capital.
Most businesses in the town remained closed, with those on lamenting low turnout of customers as compared to other days despite being an early morning.
"We woke up early to come and sell, but people are focused on the marathon. We expect customers to come back after the marathon is done," said Neddy Cherotich, a cafe owner in Eldoret.
Despite having a television at her cafe showing the marathon, she disclosed that most customers opted to watch the marathon on the famous 'Mandago screen'.
The main highway also remained closed, and traffic was diverted for the safety of spectators.
That was the small price the residents had to pay for the incredible experience that lasted two hours.
It was quite insane, as fans started streaming in as early as 7 a.m., and by 10 a.m., the streets were filled to the brim.
Darius Keter, an ardent athletics fan and Eldoret local, noted that the locals could not concentrate on their daily endeavors as the marathoners squared it out on the streets of Berlin.
"This town has a love for football, and we cannot sit down and assume nothing is going on yet. Eliud Kipchoge and Sheila Chepkirui are out there representing us. We thank the county for showing this race live," he said.
Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Chelilim Bii, who led the residents in watching the race, praised Chepkirui and Kipchoge for their incredible performances.
He further encouraged young, talented athletes to maximize their potential in order to be future record-breakers.
"I am very pleased with Eliud Kipchoge and Sheila Chepkirui for their incredible performances. We drink mursik, which helps us run fast. We are a sporting county, and we are the Home of Champions. Almost all athletes who have succeeded in this athletic field come from this city. We have prepared ourselves in such a way that we are very hospitable. If you have a talent, ensure to grow and nurture it, and someday it will pay you, just like Eliud Kipchoge. He has taught us that no man is limited," the governor said.
"We are encouraging our young people to exploit and use their talent. We are all gifted, and sports is in our DNA. Even though Kipchoge Keino Stadium is not ready, you can train anywhere and involve the county government. We are also looking at growing other sports aside from athletics. Volleyball is also coming up," Chelilim added.
Debutant Vincent Kipkemoi came in second after running under 2:03:13.
Sharon Chepkirui claimed second place in the women's category after clocking 2:11:53.
