Ejore, participating in her last competition of a year that began in February, ran her fastest mile on the road, as she came home fourth overall at the Kalakaua Merrie Mile in Honolulu, clocking 4:26.69.

Ejore, who holds the national record for the indoor mile, narrowly missed out on the podium after being pipped by America’s Josh Hoey, who came third in a time of 4:26.15 to win a cash prize worth $3000 (Ksh386,241).

For this year’s race, a gender chase format saw female runners start 31 seconds ahead of male competitors, with the overall winner determined by who reached the finish line first, regardless of gender.

The race win went to American record holder, Sinclaire Johnson, who broke the event’s course record, timing 4:21.66.

The time, also an American road mile record, broke Kenya’s Miriam Cherop’s time in 2018 by a second, but fell seven-tenths behind the world record.

Defending champion Nikki Hiltz, was second, clocking 4:24.82.

The two were the only women runners ahead of Ejore, giving her a third-place finish in the specific gender category.

Having cued up the race as one that came before her time on the beach, it was a worthy culmination to a busy year, which saw her make Kenya’s team for her first World Championships, line up in the Diamond League final in Zurich, and also debut at the Athlos event in October.

Another Kenyan taking part in the road mile - Festus Lagat - finished seventh overall (fourth in men’s category), timing 4:29.11.
