EPO has been on the WADA Prohibited List since its inception in 2004, and prior to that, it was on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) list of Banned Substances and Methods

Former U20 African Championships 3000m silver medalist Emmaculate Anyango is the latest Kenyan to face a probable ban, having been provisionally suspended for the use of EPO.

The 24-year-old announced herself to the rest of the world in Abidjan back in 2019.

In 2023 she came close to breaking the 10km world record and qualified second in the Kenyan Trials for the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships.

Her rise to one of Kenya's best prospects has also seen her win the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championship last year.

After a series of 5000m and 10k races in 2023, during which she bettered her personal best by nearly three minutes to 31:01 on the fast circuit in Lille, the Kenyan had big aspirations for 2024.

She ran 28.57 at the 2024 10K Valencia Ibercaja in January 2024, becoming the second woman ever to run a 10km event in less than 29 minutes. Her compatriot Agnes Jebet Ngetich became the first to do so in the same race, as she broke women’s 10km world record.

In February 2024, she won the Sirikwa Cross Country Classic in Eldoret.

She was runner-up to Agnes Ngetich at the Kenyan cross-country trials on Saturday 2 March 2024 and was selected for the 2024 World Cross Country Championships in Serbia, where she finished fourth, winning team gold with Kenya.
