If his recent performances are anything to go by, Simiu is on the right track to making history
Fresh from a stellar performance at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Gold Tour, world 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo Simiu has turned his focus to the upcoming Seoul Marathon slated for Sunday 16 March in South Korea.
Simiu made history as the first man to defend his title at the Sirikwa Classic held on Saturday 22 February at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.
The Iten-based athlete crossed the line in 29:57 to claim the title ahead of Gideon Rono who came in second in 30:07. Nicholas Kimeli completed the podium in 30:15.
Speaking after the race, Simiu refused to promise much, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present. He however confirmed that he will be in the Seoul Marathon start list.
“I strongly believe I will perform well in the race and secure a podium finish. Nobody knows what tomorrow holds, so let’s focus on the present,” the smiling Simiu offered.
The National Police Officer is not new to the 42km races, having made his debut during the 2024 Chicago Marathon where he finished an impressive fifth after clocking 2:06:04.
He will be keen to secure a podium finish in his second marathon.
If his recent performances are anything to go by, Simiu is on the right track to making history.
He started his 2025 by winning the National Police Service Cross Country Championships on Friday 17 January. He crossed the finish line in 29 minutes, 51.60 seconds to win the men’s 10km race.
That performance saw him book a slot at the National Cross-Country Championships held at the Eldoret Sports Club on Saturday 8 February.
His fine form continued when he won the nationals after crossing the line in 34:29:1. He would then defend his Sirikwa title to cap off an impressive cross-country season.
The former African 5,000m silver medalist is hoping to bounce back from a challenging 2024 season where he missed out on the Paris Olympics after falling during the trials held in Oregon and finishing eighth.
