Plans are underway to visit North Eastern, Upper Eastern, and Coast regions to better align the ministry's projects with their needs
Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has disclosed the plans by the ministry to help in developing young talents in athletics.
Athletics is no doubt Kenya’s best sporting discipline and one of the country's main ambassadors with Kenyans known for their dominance in middle and long-distance races.
It is therefore important for the country to keep developing young talents to have a conveyor belt of athletes to serve the country according to the CS.
A confessed athletics supporter, the CS said that his ministry will be partnering with Athletics Kenya (AK) to invest in the grassroots.
“As a ministry, we are dedicating resources to the grassroots for the development of young talent. One of our key partners in this initiative is AK,” said Murkomen.
The former Elgeyo Marakwet Senator said this when he visited Riadha House where he held discussions with the AK leadership, staff, and officials from different regions and affiliate institutions.
Additionally, the CS revealed plans to have nationwide training camps that will be all-inclusive to stakeholders.
“This year, we're supporting AK to roll out an enhanced holiday youth training camps program across the country. For better results, all stakeholders from the national level to the grassroots must be on board,” he added.
The enhanced holiday youth training camps will be significant as it has the potential to shape young athletes’ careers as well as assemble a big pool of athletes due to their nationwide reach.
Murkomen who previously held the Transport Ministry also stated that sporting facilities in Northern Kenya will be fast-tracked as an affirmative action even as he disclosed plans to tour the area.
“Following today's discussions with the grassroots officials from North Eastern, Upper Eastern, and Coast regions, I will be touring these areas to better align our projects with their needs,” he stated.
