
Commonwealth Games: Wangari delivers Kenya's second medal from women marathon

Wangari was the only Kenyan in the race after Stella Barsosio and Maureen Chepkemoi missing out
Margaret Wangari finished second in the women's marathon at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, clocking 2:28:00 to claim Kenya's second medal after Michael Githae's bronze in the men's race over the same distance earlier in the day.
Jessica Stenson cut the tape 29 seconds before Wangari at 2:27:31 to claim gold and become the first woman to win a medal in three consecutive edition of the Commonwealth Games, the gold coming on the back of bronze in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014 and another bronze in Gold Coast, Australia in 2018.

Defending champion Helalia Johannes of Namibia dropped from the leading pack towards the latter stages of the race, and seemingly looked like she would relinquish a podium finish but she carried on to finish behind Wangari and settle for Bronze.
The 36-year-old Kenyan stuck to the leading pack for the better part of the race with Stenson and Johannes, but the former produced a masterclass finish with just over two kilometers left.
