He delivered Kenya's first gold medal at the event, taking the total medals tally to seven

Ferdinand Omanyala breezed in the final of the men's 100m, storming to victory in a time of 10.02 to win Kenya's first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK.

By doing so, the 26-year-old became the first Kenyan to win gold over the distance at the competition in 60 years.

He dethroned South Africa's Akani Simbine, just like he did with the African record, and the South African had to settle for a second place finish in a time of 10.13 to take home silver.

Sri Lanka's Yupun Abeykoon clocked 10.14 to take home bronze.

On the way to the final, the African record holder over the distance posted the best time of 10.02 ahead of his South African opponent Simbine who won his semi on 10.07.

Samuel Imeta, the other Kenyan in the semis could not make it to the final having finished fifth in the third semifinal, missing narrowly on qualifying as one of the two non-automatic qualifiers.
