Kenya has six medals now, but still no gold

Irine Cheptai and Sheila Chepkirui settled for silver and bronze in the women's 10000m final to extend Kenya's medal tally to six, stopping the clock at 30:49.52 and 31:09.46 respectively, although the precious gold remained elusive once again.

Scotland's Eilish McColgan clocked 30:48.60 to take home gold, setting a new Commonwealth Games Record, her kick in the final stretching being mightier than that of Cheptai.

Chepkirui might have taken home the bronze, but perhaps it will feel more than that as she suffered a setback with just over 900m to go where she dropped from the leading trio with a limp, a scare that in a way gave Uganda's Stella Chesang hope, but the Kenyan limped her way to the finish line.

The Kenyans stuck together from early in the race, and could not let go the sight of the Scott who showed intent to go all the way from the word go, her long strides coming in handy.

With nine laps to go, Cheptai took charge, leading her compatriot as McColgan, who had led from gun dropped back to third place, and the three broke away from the initial leading pack.

Uganda's Stella Chesang, the reigning champion in the 25 laps race having claimed gold in Gold Coast back in 2018, was hoping to defend the title but had to settle for a fourth-place finish.
