Chepkorir, Keter emerge victorious in last day of AK track and field meet in Kisumu

In the 100m section, Millicent Ndoro shone in the women's category sprinting in 11:3 while Robinson Mutende carried the day in the men's category after a 10:5 seconds finish

Caroline Chepkorir and Vincent Keter were in a form of their own when they effortlessly won the 1500m category on the final day of the Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field meet held in Kisumu on Saturday.

Chepkorir crossed the finish line in 4:35:28 while his male counterpart Keter finished in 3:44:44 to carry the day.

Keter outclassed a strong contingent that included Dennis Kiprono and Rodgers Murei who finished second and third in 3:45:82 and 3:47:49 respectively.

The women's 1500m finals were even more competitive, with Tecla Lokrale occupying second position in 4:38:64, while Allabonsina Maneni took third place in 4:52:49.

The event was followed by the 800m finals category where Sandra Chepkoech and Collins Kipruto wowed the audience with their resilient runs.

Chepkoech finished the challenge in 2:1:13 while Kipruto did an impressive 1:49:1 to be crowned champions.

Kipruto was closely followed by Allan Kipyegon (1:49.5) while Laban Kipkorir finished the podium in 1:49.8.

The remaining podium places in the women's category were occupied by Lilian Odira who claimed second place in 2:11.63, while Dovin Chepkimi settled for third place after a sparkling 2:12.91.

In the 100m section, Millicent Ndoro shone in the women's category sprinting in 11:3 while Robinson Mutende carried the day in the men's category after a 10:5 seconds finish.

Esther Mbagari followed Ndolo to finish in 11:7, and Eunice Kadogo took third position in 11:9.

Dan Kiviasi finished in second place after sprinting in 10:7 seconds, while Kadogo finished third in 10:8.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth Development Committee Chairman Barnabas Korir praised the participants for the amazing show, noting that the competitions were crucial as the country gears up for the 2024 World Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

He noted that various junior athletes had been drawn from Riooga, Ebwali, Mumias, Kiptere, Keberesi, Sinonin, and Machakos Talent Academy. AK recently increased the number of camps from 21 to 42.

"Junior athletes from various camps in the country are competing at the first Athletics Kenya track and field meet that got underway today at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu," Korir posted on his socials.

Athletics Kenya officials led by senior Vice President Paul Mutwii encouraged the athletes to continue stepping up their training to make the cut in the national team for next year's World Under-20 Championships.
