World Under-20 1500m champion Purity Chepkirui has set her sights on dazzling at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships as she looks to defend her title with a shot at the World Championships still in her plans.

She has continued to stamp her authority in the age group races, her most recent victory coming at another World Athletics event, the Agnes Tirop Memorial World Cross Country Tour held in Eldoret on 12 February 2022.

Chepkirui, competing in the Under-20 6km girls' category clocked 20:49 improving her position at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships that had taken place at the same course three weeks earlier by one place.

"I am happy with my preparations for the new season. It is a busy one and I am using the Cross country events to build on endurance and stamina as I move to the track competitions.

I have set my sights on defending my Under-20 title in Cali, Colombia but before then I will give qualification to the World Athletics Championships a shot," said the soft spoken form two student.

The World Under-20 event, a reserve for athletes qualifying as juniors who must be born no earlier than 1 January 2003, will be held from 2 to 7 August 2022 at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia. The city hosted the 2015 World Youth Championships.

Meanwhile, the senior event is scheduled for 15 to 24 July in Eugene, Oregon, United States. The event was originally scheduled for August 6 to 15, 2021. However, the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics prompted the need for postponement into 2022.
