In a statement released on Tuesday, 13 January, the global governing body confirmed that bids are now open for the 2028 World Athletics Road Running Championships, the 2029 World Athletics Road Running Championships and the 2029 World Athletics Cross Country Championships.

Member federations were briefed on the process ahead of the year-end period to give ample time to prepare their submissions.

The World Athletics Road Running Championships has quickly become one of the sport’s most accessible and dynamic events.

In its one-day format, roughly 350 elite athletes from around 55 countries compete in half-marathon and 5km races, alongside mass participation events that attract thousands of recreational runners.

Each edition transforms the host city into the road running capital of the world,” the statement read, highlighting the potential for hosts to boost participation, visibility, and revenue while enhancing their international running profile.

The World Athletics Cross Country Championships remains the pinnacle of off-road running.

Featuring approximately 550 athletes from about 52 countries, the championships test competitors on technically challenging and scenic courses.

Hosts can also include mass participation races, providing opportunities to promote active tourism, forge partnerships, and showcase both natural and urban landscapes to a global audience.

Bid guides for each event, detailing hosting requirements and impact data from previous editions, are available on the World Athletics website.

The deadline for submission of pre-qualification forms for the 2028 and 2029 World Road Running Championships and the 2029 World Cross Country Championships is Friday, April 3, 2026.
