The decision was reached during an emergency CAA Council meeting held on Saturday, 16 May in Accra, Ghana, where members unanimously agreed that Tuwei would take over in an acting capacity until elections scheduled for 2027.
Malboum, who died earlier this week at the age of 75, had led the Confederation since 2003 and was widely credited for his contribution to the growth and development of athletics across the African continent.
Tributes poured in from across the athletics world, led by Sebastian Coe and other global sports leaders, who praised his impact on the sport.
Tuwei’s appointment marks another major milestone in his career in sports administration. The retired lieutenant general currently serves as president of Athletics Kenya and previously held the role of CAA vice-president.
In 2023, he made history after being elected as the vice-president of World Athletics during the 54th World Athletics Congress in Budapest. Tuwei secured 104 votes, becoming the first Kenyan to hold the influential position within the global athletics governing body.
Over the years, Tuwei has played a key role in athletics governance both locally and internationally. At Athletics Kenya, he has overseen talent development programmes from grassroots structures to elite athlete management, while also serving in several senior positions within World Athletics.
The emergency council meeting also saw Tonobok Okowa elevated to senior vice-president of the Confederation. The move was aimed at maintaining continuity within the executive structure and ensuring regional balance in leadership.
Founded in 1973, the Confederation of African Athletics oversees the management of athletics across 54 member associations and organises key continental competitions, including the African Senior Athletics Championships.
Tuwei’s interim appointment comes at a critical period for the Confederation as it seeks stability following Malboum’s death while preparing for upcoming global and continental competitions.
Attention will now shift to how the organisation navigates the transition ahead of the 2027 elections.
