All qualifying athletes will have to meet the required entry standards for their respective disciplines as outlined by World Athletics.

The national trials for this year’s World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, will be held on June 26–28 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

As per Athletics Kenya, who made the announcement on Tuesday, the top two finishers in each category of the competition will be selected but they must provide evidence that they are under 20 years old.

“AK will apply stringent measures to ensure all competitors meet this requirement,” Athletics Kenya’s media statement read. “All competitors are therefore expected to submit their documents for vetting on Wednesday, June 26.”

Among the documents to be used for verification are original birth certificates, original passports, student identification, a national ID (if applicable), a school release letter, or parental consent.

The athletes who will ultimately be selected as per AK will have to meet the required entry standards for their respective disciplines as outlined by World Athletics.

Leading to this event, the Federation, in close association with the Ministry of Sports through the Sports Act and Social Development Fund (SASDF), has established, managed, and held training camps across the country, where young talents have been identified, incubated and nurtured.

The camps, held during school holidays, have been targeted to provide specialized training to enable the federation to pick a formidable team for the country, all to achieve good results at international level competitions.

During the last edition of the U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, in 2022, Kenya accumulated 10 medals (three gold, three silver, and four bronze).

Among the standouts who broke their way from the U20 Championships are: mile record holder Emmanuel Wanyonyi; World U20 Champion in the 1500m Reynold Cheruiyot, and Beatrice Chebet, the world record holder in the women’s 10,000m.
