Athletics Kenya will host the trials at the Kenya Prisons Training College in Ruiru
The country's athletics governing body Athletics Kenya (AK) is set to host trials for the World Cross Country Championships on Saturday 2 March at the Kenya Prisons Training College in Ruiru from 8AM EAT.
The trials will serve as qualifiers for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships set for Belgrade, Serbia on 30 March.
Kenyan athletes will be out to defend the overall title they won in Bathurst in 2023.
They returned home with 10 medals; six gold, two silver, and two bronze. That impressive performance saw Team Kenya take first place in the medal count. Kenya won three team titles, mixed relays and two individual titles.
Beatrice Chebet, the world 5,000m silver medalist and the Commonwealth 5,000m champion, won the senior women's 10km race, while Agnes Jebet finished third.
Pamela Kosgei won bronze in the women's Under-20 6km race and Ishmael Kipkirui led Reynold Kipkorir to a podium sweep in the men's Under-20 8km race.
The team of Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Miriam Cherop, Kyumbe Munguti and Brenda Chebet won the mixed relay race. Geoffrey Kamworor was the best-placed kenyan in the senior men's race at fourth.
The men will be looking to wrestle the senior title from Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo and the U20 women's title from Ethiopia, Senayet Getachew.
Following that, AK will host the second event of the week which will be a two-day trial for the upcoming Africa Games slated for 8-23 March in Ghana. The trials will be held from March 5-6 at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The trials were postponed in honour of the late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum.
In a recent statement, AK revealed that they will only field 30 athletes during the African Games, owing to financial constraints.
According to AK Vice President Paul Mutwi, they have been allocated only 30 slots for athletes and five for team management by the Kenya National Sports Council.
Athletes invited for the trials will be required to collect their running numbers, in person, on Monday 4 March from (9 am-6 pm) at the Nyayo Stadium, failure to which they will be locked out of the trials.
Also, athletes who will compete in the World Athletics Cross Country trials in Ruiru will not be viable to compete in the All African games trials.
