All the race winners will also be taken through a Financial Fitness and Literacy Programme spearheaded by Stanbic Bank Kenya.
Registration for the annual Nakuru City Marathon is set to open on Tuesday, 9 November 2021 as organisers target 3,000 participants, 200 being elite runners owing to the prevailing Covid-19 restrictions.
The first official race will take place on 28 November 2021 with runners taking part in three race categories; 21km, 10km and 5km. The winners, in both men and women categories in the 21km race will go home with Ksh 500,000 while the winners in the 10km race category take home Ksh 100,000.
The annual event aims to create an opportunity for young athletes in the county to demonstrate their athletic abilities and be part of the thriving sports and culture industry in Kenya.
Stanbic Bank Kenya, who on 5 November committed to being the title sponsor for the Nakuru City Marathon, had in July through the Stanbic Kenya Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the County Government of Nakuru where they are currently collaborating to empower youth through digital learning which will expose them to the global market and ideas.
Under a program dubbed ‘Accelerate’, the bank has been imparting digital skills through a digital training platform Future Ni Digital, that seeks to address a skills gap in the country and boost the employability of citizens through digital upskilling.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Lee Kinyanjui lauded Stanbic Bank Kenya and other stakeholders for showing interest in supporting the race, noting that their efforts will be instrumental in transforming lives, more so for the youth in the county, while providing a training ground for upcoming athletes who are keen on further developing their talent.
“Nakuru County is committed to promoting sports talent especially the youth. Nakuru City Marathon will boost initiatives rolled out by the County to promote athletics talent including the ongoing construction of Keringet Sports Academy and the upgrade of Afraha Stadium,” said the Governor.
