Reigning London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso expects a “tough” outing in the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon this weekend, but is hopeful of claiming a win to end his year on a high.
The 28-year-old Japan-based athlete was among the studded faces to arrive in Thailand this week, ready for the 21km race in Bang Saen Beach, Thailand.
Sunday’s event is a 2024 Platinum label and will see Mutiso come in as the fastest in a challenging pack, having clocked 57:59 earlier this year at the Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon.
“I expect tough opposition—it won’t be an easy race. But I’m confident I can pull off a win,” Munyao, off a second-place finish at the NITTAIDAI Challenge Games in Japan told The Star on Friday.
“My training has been average since I competed in Japan but I believe the work I have put in will suffice,” he added.
Duelling him for the title will be 2022 London Marathon silver medalist Leul Gebresilase Allem and this year’s Malaga Half Marathon champion Geofry Toroitich Kipchumba.
Kenya’s Justus Kangogo and Bazezew Asmare of Ethiopia will also be on the list.

In the women’s category, Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru will come up against former world marathon record holder Tigst Assefa in what is expected to be a sensational duel.
Gladys Chepkirui and Winfridah Moraa Moseti of Kenya will also be in contention for the title.
