Eleven months down the line, the winners of the Eldoret City Marathon are still waiting for their pay
Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei has urged the County Government of Uasin Gishu to compensate the winners of the 2022 Eldoret City Marathon, which took place on 10th April 2022.
The winner of the 2022 edition was to be awarded Ksh3.5 million. Emily Chebet took first place in the ladies’ category, while Victor Kipchirchir won the men's category.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 32nd edition of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country at the Eldoret Sports Club, Tuwei urged the County Government to support the athletes by paying prize monies.
“We have discussed with the organizers of the Eldoret City Marathon and we have agreed that our athletes have to be paid. We are asking the County Government of Uasin Gishu to fulfill this so that we come back in April for the next edition.” Tuwei said.
Furthermore, Tuwei stated that not paying the athletes will demotivate them, effectively killing the marathon.
“Let us not kill that sport. I want the athletes to be paid, and am sure with the cooperation of the organizers they will be paid. Let’s not deal with one thing all along.”
Tuwei also mentioned that city marathons are making a comeback, and that they are a great place to find athletic talent.
“More marathons are now coming up. We have the Eldoret Marathon, Nakuru City Marathon, Nairobi City Marathons, and Mombasa City Marathon.”
He also urged other cities, such as Kisumu, to follow suit in order to produce more athletes for Kenya, and he insisted that athletes be paid.
“We encourage other cities like Kisumu to join and organize such marathons.”
Emmaculate Anyango won the senior ladies’ category of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country while Weldon Lagat won the senior men’s category.
